Step-Parenting Counseling and Support

Dynamics between a married couple can be highly emotionally charged around issues of step-parenting. Forty percent of Americans have at least one step-relative in their family, either a stepparent, a stepsibling or half sibling, or a stepchild, according to the Pew Research Center.

Step-Parent counseling can benefit blended families

For those who know how challenging it is to parent in a traditional family, you are going to have extra challenges in figuring out how to effectively and peacefully manage a step-family. For those of you who don’t have children of your own, the road you are traveling is even more confounding.

The biggest challenge to the majority of the stepparents is the ambiguity about their role in terms of discipline. In traditional families the roles tend to be clearer and more well-defined, for step-parents it can seem fuzzy and constantly changing which brings confusion and frustration to children and parents.

Step-parenting is an evolving process. Our counseling sessions can show you how to set appropriate expectations for children’s behavior and clearly define roles and set boundaries for step-parents. When all of these things are agreed upon up front and approached with consistency, your home life will be much more pleasant.
